How to Grow Amazon Sword Successfully (Beginner Tips That Work)

How to Grow Amazon Sword Successfully Wander WIthin Life

The easiest aquarium plant for new fishkeepers

In my early tanks, it felt like the plant that finally made the aquarium look serious — wide leaves, strong presence, and that lush green that makes fish and shrimp stand out.

The nice part is: it looks dramatic, but it’s actually very forgiving.

If you give it space for roots, steady light, and a bit of food at the base, Amazon Sword will quietly turn your tank into a small underwater jungle.

In this guide, I’ll walk through:

  • How I plant Amazon Sword step by step

  • The water parameters it does well in

  • Simple fertilizing routines that work in low-tech tanks

  • Common problems I’ve seen — and how I usually fix them

✅ What Amazon Sword Needs to Thrive

I like to think of Amazon Sword as a slow but steady eater.
It pulls most of its energy from the substrate, not just from the water.

Here’s the quick overview:

RequirementBest RangeWhy It Matters
LightMediumKeeps leaves bright & strong
CO₂Not requiredCan improve growth but optional
Temperature22–28°CIdeal tropical range
pH6.5–7.5Stable, neutral water
Substrate Depth5–7 cmDeep roots need room
FertilizationRoot tabsAmazon Sword is a heavy root feeder

🌱 Root structure is the key!
They absorb most nutrients from the substrate, not the water column.

You don’t need perfect numbers as long as things are stable. Amazon Sword is quite forgiving of normal tap water as long as it isn’t extreme.

🌿 How to Plant Amazon Sword Properly

Planting is where many beginners accidentally hurt this plant — usually by burying the crown too deep.

Here’s the method I use:

  1. Prepare the spot

    • Choose a place in the mid-background or background.

    • Make sure there is at least 5–7 cm of substrate depth.

    • Gently dig a small hole with your fingers or tweezers.

  2. Check the crown

    • The crown is the point where leaves meet roots.

    • This part should never be buried.

  3. Place the plant

    • Put the roots into the hole.

    • Spread them gently so they’re not all bent upwards.

  4. Cover the roots only

    • Backfill the substrate until the roots are covered and the crown is just above the surface.

    • Press lightly around the base so the plant feels stable.

  5. Feed the roots

    • Push 1–2 root tabs near the root zone (not touching the crown).

    • In a richer mineral soil or deep-substrate tank, you may not need tabs immediately, but they still help over time.

  6. Avoid direct strong flow

    • Point filters and powerheads away so they don’t blow directly onto the plant and loosen it.

If the crown gets buried, the plant can rot from the base. If you notice this early, gently lift the plant and re-plant it a bit higher.

🌞 Lighting Tips

Amazon Sword doesn’t demand powerful lighting, which makes it nice for everyday setups.

What usually works well:

  • Medium light for around 7–8 hours per day

  • A simple white LED with a balanced spectrum is fine

  • Avoid very long photo periods (10–12 hours) if you’re not running CO₂ — that often leads to algae on the leaves

If algae starts appearing on the broad leaves:

  • Reduce light duration a little

  • Make sure there is enough plant mass overall

  • Gently wipe affected leaves with your fingers during water changes

You don’t need pressurised CO₂ for this plant. CO₂ can boost growth, but many Amazon Swords grow large and healthy in normal low-tech tanks with stable light and proper root feeding.

🧪 Fertilization Guide (Simple)

Think “feed the roots first”.

Amazon Sword is a heavy root feeder, so:

  • Liquid fertilizer alone is usually not enough long-term.

  • Root tabs provide a slow, gentle supply of nutrients right where the plant wants them.

A simple routine:

  • Add root tabs every 3–4 weeks near the base of the plant.

  • Use liquid fertilizer at a low dose 1–2 times a week if you have other stem plants or mosses.

Signs it needs more food:

  • New leaves come out pale or yellowish.

  • Growth slows down even though light and temperature are fine.

When that happens, I don’t panic — I just add fresh root tabs and give it a few weeks to respond.

🛠️ Common Problems & Fixes

Most Amazon Sword issues look scary but are simple to correct.

ProblemWhy It HappensQuick Fix
Yellow leavesLack of iron or root nutrientsAdd root tabs
Brown spotsOld leaves dyingTrim & let new growth take over
Melting after plantingNew environment shockIt will recover — give 2–4 weeks
Holes in leavesNutrient deficiency / snailsRoot tabs + remove pest snails

✅ Tip: Don’t be afraid to trim damaged leaves.
Removing them lets the plant focus energy on healthy new growth.

When I move an Amazon Sword into a new tank, I expect some melting. As long as the crown and roots stay firm and new leaves appear, the plant is fine.

✅ Best Tank Placement

Amazon Sword can reach 40–60 cm tall in good conditions, so it’s more of a feature plant than a small accent.

I usually place it:

  • In the background or mid-background

  • Slightly off-center, so it doesn’t block the whole view

  • Behind rocks or driftwood, with smaller plants in front

If it grows too big, you can:

  • Trim older outer leaves at the base

  • Move it toward the back corner

  • Use it as the “anchor” plant in a deep substrate or natural-method tank

A single healthy Amazon Sword can make a simple layout feel lush and complete.

🦐 Shrimp + Fish Compatibility

The good news:

  • Shrimp-safe — they love grazing on the large leaf surfaces

  • ✅ Great shelter for baby shrimp and shy fish

  • ✅ Works well with peaceful community fish like rasboras, tetras, and small gouramis

What to avoid:

  • ⚠️ Goldfish and large digging cichlids

    • They may uproot the plant or chew on the leaves.

  • ⚠️ Heavy plant-eating species (some bigger cichlids, silver dollars, etc.)

In a normal community or shrimp tank, Amazon Sword is usually a calm, well-behaved neighbour.

⭐ Final Thoughts

Amazon Sword looks like a “serious” planted-tank plant, but it behaves like a patient teacher:

  • It forgives small mistakes.

  • It doesn’t demand fancy equipment.

  • It simply asks for space to root, steady light, and occasional food at its base.

If you want a strong focal plant that makes your tank feel mature and natural, this is one of the easiest choices to start with.

Give it time, feed the roots, and let it slowly turn your aquarium into a quiet green forest.
